How to Reset the Computer on a Nissan Sentra

Print this article

When the check engine light illuminates on the dash in a Nissan
Sentra, it is an indication that the computer has recognized a problem within its sphere of influence. Once the problem has been addressed and corrective action completed, the computer can be reset by erasing the existing codes.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Code scanner
1

Insert the code scanner's connector into the OBD port located under the dash to the right of the steering column.
2

Turn the ignition key to the run position. Make sure the engine is off.
3

Press the button for "Read" on the code scanner. Within less than 1 minute, the scanner will display all failure codes that are stored in its memory.
4

Write down the failure codes displayed by the scanner. Cross-reference the codes with the code sheet that comes with the scanner. The codes are displayed with a letter followed by a four-digit number code. Deciphering these codes by cross-referencing them with the code sheet offers an explanation of the failure.
5

Turn the key off. Correct the failure so that the computer can be reset.
6

Turn the ignition key on, keeping the engine off. Press the "Erase" button on the scanner. Start the vehicle and allow it to run for 5 minutes. Watch for the check engine light to come back on. If it does, the problem has not been corrected. If it stays off, the problem has been successfully resolved.

How to Replace a Fuel Pump in a Nissan Altima

The fuel pump in a Nissan Altima is electric so you should check the fuses and relays before inspecting the fuel pump itself. If you have fuel in your tank but your vehicle has difficulty getting fuel, you may need to clean your fuel pump or replace it entirely. The Nissan Altima's variety of styles may affect your choice of fuel pump.
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Fuel pump kit
Socket wrench set
Torque wrench
1

Determine the fuel pump that your Nissan Altima will require. This depends on the make and model and engine size of your vehicle. Models made before 2002 will have a 2.4 L KA24DE engine and models made after 2001 may have a 2.5 L QR25DE or a 3.5 L VQ35DE engine.
2

Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.
3

Access the fuel pump by taking out the rear seat and removing the access cover. Unplug the fuel pump's electrical connection and disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump. Remove the locking ring or screws with a socket wrench and disconnect the fuel gauge assembly so that you can disconnect the fuel tube from the fuel gauge.
4

Remove the fuel pump by holding the connector for the fuel line in one hand while pressing down on the two locking tabs at the same time. Lift the fuel pump out of the fuel tank. Discard the O-ring.
5

Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit, especially the O-ring. If you have a threaded lock ring, torque it to between 22 and 26 ft. lbs. If you have lock ring with six retaining screws, torque them to between 18 and 22 in. lbs.

How to Replace Front Disc Brakes in a Nissan Pathfinder

If you own a 2002 through 2005 Nissan Pathfinder and the brake light stays on for the entire drive or if it pulls to one side when you apply the brakes then you need to do some mechanical repairs to fix the problem. Replace the front disc brakes on your Nissan Pathfinder.
Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Brake pads
Syringe, turkey baster or similar tool
Brake fluid
Wood wedges or similar tools
Torque wrench
C-clamp or similar tool
Mechanic's wire
1

Park the Nissan Pathfinder on a flat surface. Place the parking brake on. Using a syringe, turkey baster or similar tool, siphon the fluid out of the master cylinder reservoir. Drain two thirds of the fluid out of the cylinder. If the level is less than half way full no fluid needs to be drained. Place wood wedges or similar tools behind the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
2

Jack the vehicle up and secure it on jackstands. Remove the wheel assemblies. Remove the lower pin bolt from the brake caliper. Rotate the caliper up, allowing access to the torque member. Suspend the caliper from the frame using mechanics wire.
3

Remove the brake pads by lifting out of the torque member. Remove the hims and the retainers if they are not engaged onto the pads. Install the new pads. Reinstall the shims by engaging them on the torque member. Engage and enstall pad liners to each pad.
4

Compress the caliper pistons back into the housing using a C-clamp or similar tool. Remove the mechanic's wire and pivot the caliper back into position. Make sure that it is over the torque plate and that the dust boot is not pinched. Install the caliper pin.
5

Using a torque wrench, torque the bolts to 24 to 31 ft. lbs. Remove any trapped air by pulling, gently on the pin boot. Reinstall the wheel. Lower the vehicle. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery and start the engine. Fill the master cylinder reservoir with brake fluid and put the cap on.
6

Start the engine and apply the brake pedal 3 to 4 times seating the brake pads. Test Drive the Pathfinder at slow-to-moderate speeds to ensure that maintenance was performed correctly.

Tips & Warnings

Prior to performing the maintenance on your Nissan Pathfinder visit your local automotive parts supply store and purchase the necessary tools. Be prepared to provide the auto parts store employee with the make, model and year of your Nissan Pathfinder.

How to Change the Headlight on a 2005 Nissan Maxima

Change the headlights on your Nissan Maxima for maximum visibility and performance.

The 2005 Nissan Maxima headlight system has two options, a 9012 halogen bulb or a Xenon bulb available only through Nissan. The Xenon or High Intensity Discharge headlight is brighter than the halogen bulb but must be changed by a service tech at Nissan. The halogen system was more common in the Maxima and the 9012 bulbs are available at any auto parts store, allowing the vehicle owner to change the bulbs themselves. If you are not sure which type of headlight is in your Maxima, check with a Nissan service department, they can help you identify them.
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
1

Open the hood of your Maxima and locate the large plastic cover on the rear of the headlight assembly. There is a single wire running to it and it is the largest of the sockets and caps on the headlight assembly.
2

Rotate the headlight bulb cap counterclockwise and remove it from the housing. Lay it aside then disconnect the electrical connector from the rear of the bulb by pulling it straight off the bulb. Unlock the spring clip that is retaining the bulb in the housing and swing it out of the way.
3

Remove the bulb from the headlight assembly and discard it. Install a new 9012 bulb into the housing, being careful not to touch the glass on the new bulb while installing it. Oils from your hands will cause the halogen bulb to overheat and fail.
4

Swing the locking spring clip over the bulb and hook it under the catch on the headlight assembly. Install the wiring harness connector on the back of the bulb and install the plastic headlight bulb cap on the rear of the headlight assembly. Turn the cap clockwise until it is tight.
5

Turn the headlight switch on and verify that the bulb is working. Cycle through the high and low beam positions, checking them both then shut off the lights.

Tips & Warnings

While you can change a single headlight bulb on your Maxima, it is recommended that you change the headlight bulbs in pairs for best performance.

How to Change Automatic Transmission Fluid in a Nissan Maxima

Change the automatic transmission fluid every 30,000 miles if you drive the Maxima under severe conditions. Otherwise, you can change the fluid less often. How to Install Back Speakers in a Nissan Maxima

Nissan Maxima models come equipped with factory-installed stereo systems. However, many audio enthusiasts will replace components of the factory stereo, including the rear speakers, with high-performance aftermarket equipment. The back speakers are often one of the first sets of speakers that drivers change, since aftermarket speakers usually have improved bass response.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Phillips screwdrivers
Replacement speakers
Wire cutters/strippers/crimpers
Quick slide connectors
1

Open the trunk of the vehicle, and crawl in on your back so that you can see the underneath of the vehicle's rear deck. You'll see two speakers mounted underneath the rear deck.
2

Remove the four screws surrounding each of the speakers. These screws don't hold the speaker in, but instead secure the grille that covers each of the speakers on the inside of the car.
3

Go into the back seat of the car. Pull each of the grilles off the rear deck by lifting straight up from the speaker. This reveals each of the speakers.
4

Undo the screws holding the speakers into the rear deck, and then pull the speakers out of the rear deck. Each speaker will have a wiring plug clipped to it. Pull the wiring plugs out from the sockets on the factory speakers.
5

Cut off the wiring plugs on the factory speakers. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation off each lead so that you have 1/2 inch of bare wire on each lead. Crimp quick slide connectors that match the size of the new speaker's terminals onto each lead by sliding each connector onto the bare wire and then crimping the connector in place.
6

Slide the quick slide connectors onto the terminals of the new speakers, then place the speakers into the openings. Screw the new speakers into place with the screws you removed earlier.
7

Replace the grilles onto the speakers, and then go back into the trunk and secure the grilles.

How to Change Automatic Transmission Fluid in a Nissan Sentra

You should change the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles if you drive the car under normal conditions. However, under severe services, you need to change the fluid every 15,000 miles. The following covers Nissan Sentra models from 1982 through 1996.
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Ramps or a floor jack
Jack stands
Wheel blocks
Drain pan
Socket wrench
New separator plate (if needed)
RTV sealant
New fluid pan gasket
Torque wrench
New transmission fluid
Funnel
1

Drive the car for 15 to 20 minutes to allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature. Park the car and turn the engine off. Raise the front of the car with ramps or a floor jack and support it with jack stands and wheel blocks.
2

Look for a drain plug on the transmission pan. Some models will have one, others won't. If there isn't a drain plug, continue to Step 3. If there is a drain plug, put a large drain pan beneath the plug, remove the drain plug and allow the fluid to drain. Skip to Step 4.
3

Use a socket wrench to loosen the retaining screws on the pan until you can gently pull one corner of the pan down. Take care not to bend or damage the fluid pan. Fluid will begin to drain. Remove the fluid pan retaining screws and take the pan off the transmission. Remove the old gasket and discard it. Clean the pan thoroughly and set it aside to air dry.
4

Remove the control valve body, oil strainer plate bolts and the separator plate. If the plate shows any scratches, dents or other damage, then you should replace it. Otherwise, you can reinstall the same separator plate.
5

Apply a thin bead of RTV sealant along the pan flange. The sealant should go on the outside of the boltholes, rather than on the inside. Align the new gasket onto the fluid pan and reinstall the fluid pan onto the transmission. Tighten the retaining screws evenly to 43 to 61 inch pounds with a torque wrench.
6

Measure the amount of transmission fluid that you drained from the transmission. Add the same amount of new Dexron II automatic transmission fluid to the transmission through the filler tube using a clean funnel. Replace the dipstick.
7

Start the engine, allow it to idle for a few minutes and shift the transmission through the gears, ending in "Park." Check the fluid level, which should be between the "H" and "L" marks on the dipstick. Add sufficient fluid if needed. Otherwise, replace the dipstick, close the hood and turn off the engine.

How to Replace EGR Valve on Nissan Sentra

Your Nissan Sentra's Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve is designed to send the unburned emissions fumes back into the engine so it can burn as much of the fuel as possible. This reduces the amount of emissions fumes expelled from the tailpipe. Occasionally, you will want to replace the EGR valve to keep the engine running efficiently. You can replace the valve yourself in just a few minutes.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Socket wrench set
1

Pop your hood and locate the EGR valve, which is attached to the metal emissions tube above the intake manifold next to the firewall. Look for a round, metal cylinder with a rubber vacuum hose running from the top of the valve.
2

Slide the rubber vacuum hose off the EGR valve port by hand and set the hose out of the way. Unfasten the bolts securing the valve to the metal emissions tube with a socket wrench.
3

Remove the EGR valve from the engine compartment. Attach the new EGR valve to the metal emissions tube with the bolts.
4

Plug the rubber vacuum hose into the EGR valve port at the top of the valve to complete the part replacement.

Tips & Warnings

Allow the engine to cool down before attempting to replace the EGR valve.

How to Replace Wheel Bearings on a 2001 Nissan Sentra

Wheel bearings carry the weight of the wheels in your 2001 Nissan Sentra. They also help to prevent wear on the driveshaft. When the wheel bearings begin to wear out on your Sentra, you will hear a "whistle" coming from that wheel while you are driving. Normally, the faster you move, the louder the "whistle". You should check the Sentra's wheel bearings every 30,000 miles. However, most likely, they will need to be replaced after 60,000 miles.
Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
Things You'll Need
4 ton jack with jack stands

Channel locks
Pliers
Bearing race driver tool
Various size punch tools
Open ended and box end wrench set (metric)
Socket wrench and socket set (metric)
Torque wrench
Shop towels or rags
New wheel bearings
Wheel bearing grease
New cotter pin
New grease seals
Zip ties
Rubber mallet
Hammer
Brake parts cleaner
1

Engage the emergency brake. Place the socket end of the tire wrench over the lug nuts and turn 45 degrees to break the nuts loose. Do not unseat the wheel from the wheel hub.
2

Jack the Sentra into the air using the factory front jack point. This is located behind the radiator.
3

Finish loosening the lug nuts and remove the wheel.
4

Unbolt the upper and lower caliper mounting bolts and lift the caliper off the brake rotor.
5

Secure the brake caliper to the coil springs above the brake system with zip ties.
6

Slide the brake rotor off the hub assembly.
7

Remove the bearing cap on your Sentra. To do this, you need to use channel locks. Grab the bearing cap with the end of the channel locks. Then, twist the channel locks back and forth. You will eventually be able to loosen the bearing cap so that you can pull it off.
8

Grab the end of the cotter pin on the spindle nut with pliers and pull it out of the nut. You may need to pull fairly hard, but the pin will come out.
9

Turn the spindle nut counterclockwise to remove the spindle nut.
10

Tap the wheel bearing out of place with a rubber mallet or a hammer.
11

Tap the bearing races out of the hub with a hammer and punch tool. You need to do this for both sides of the hub.
12

Clean the inside of the hub, the spindle, as well as the spindle nut brake parts cleaner and wipe them dry with a clean rag.
13

Install the new wheel bearing. Tap the new bearing into the hub using a rubber mallet. Make sure you are using a rubber mallet so that you do not damage the new bearing.
14

Reassemble the hub assembly, brake assembly, and put the wheel back on and tighten the lug nuts so that the wheel sits flush against the wheel hub. Installation is the reverse of removal.
15

Lower the Sentra to the ground and set the dial on a torque wrench to 100 lb-ft. Tighten the lug nuts clockwise until the wrench clicks. This will indicate that the proper torque value has been reached.

How to change 1997 Nissan Sentra front brake and rotor (with photo)

An extension is needed to remove the 17mm screws

I was looking for instruction on how to change the front brake pads and the rotors on my 12 year old 97 Nissan Sentra GXE. I found some generic instructions and videos. Some of them were not very helpful and some had incorrect information. Here is my attempt to illustrate the process.
Steps to change the front brake pads and rotors on a 1997 Nissan Sentra. It is very easy.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
1

* Buy the rotors from local auto parts store so you can easily return them if necessary.
* Do your online shopping first and find the best deal so you can ask for a price match.
* I paid $33 for a pair of front brake rotors at Oreilly's.
* Open the brake fluid reservoir top.
* Engage the emergency brake and park on a flat surface.
* Put 2 bricks on each of the back wheel, one in the front, one in the back so the car does not move when the front wheel is lifted.
* Take the hub cap off.
* Loosen all 4 lug nuts slightly before lifting the front wheel. That helps minimize jerking of the car while lifted.
2

* Lift one of the front wheels. I did the right one first.
* I used the 2 ton hydraulic jack that I bought a few years ago on the Black Friday sale.
* Slide in a bunch of 2x4s or a jack stand under the car to hold the car up.
* Lower the hydraulic jack's pressure so that most of the weight is on the jack stand or the 2x4s but keep the hydraulic jack lifted just as a backup.
* Now loosen all 4 lug nuts using the factory provided crow-bar like tool.
* Before you remove the wheel, take a chalk and mark one of the lug nuts and the corresponding screw and the position on the wheel so you can put it back exactly the way it was before.
* Remove the wheel.
3

* Now, carefully open the car door and move the steering wheel all the way to the right so the bare wheel assembly moves to the right. You will see the parts better that way.
* You will need a 14 MM socket. Use a long pipe if you have to in order to get leverage and unscrew if needed.
* I saw on a Youtube video that a guy was hammering the ratchet to loosen the 2 caliper screws. It is not recommended. I actually broke a ratchet that way. Always use a long pipe to extend the handle of the ratchet.
* Carefully remove the caliper assembly and hang it with a clothes hanger. See photo. Make sure the brake fluid lines are not stressed.
4

* Using a C-clamp slightly press back the round brake pressure apparatus. This step was not needed for me since I was not replacing the brake pads which were less than a year old and hardly used.
* Remove the brake pads and make sure the 2 little spring pins are also removed.
* Clean the assembly that holds the brake pads.
* Now you need to remove the assembly that holds the brake pads.
* You will need a 17 MM socket and a 2 or 3 inch extension. The extension is needed because there is a screw that is on the way to the caliper screw/socket. See photo.
* These 2 screws were very hard to remove on my 12 year old car.
5

* I carefully sprayed the screws with lubricant that is specially made to loosen rusted nuts and bolts.
* Then I tried to tighten the screw a little bit instead of loosening. That helped.
* Then I attached a pipe to extend the ratchet handle and that helped a lot with unscrewing both screws.
* Take the old rotor off. It should come off easily. If not, very gently tap it with a hammer.
* Spray the new rotor with any Acetone based brake cleaner and remove as much oil from it as possible. Without removal of the oil, the rotor will smoke when used the first time. I used some nail polish remover to do the cleaning.
6

* Use a dab of a high temperature brake grease on all screws after cleaning them. You can buy a grease tube for $1.
* Slap in the new rotor. Hold the new rotor in position by screwing in one of the lower lug nuts.
* Clean the brake pad holder assembly and screw it back using the 17 MM screws. Make sure these screws are very tight.
* Clean the caliper assembly. Put the shims on the back of the pads and use the high temperature brake grease on the back of the shims.
7

* Slap in the new brake pads. The pad with the long metal tab goes in the back. Put back the 2 pin springs. See photo.
* Put back the caliper assembly. Put the 14 MM caliper screws back and make sure the caliper assembly can move side by side slightly. Make sure the rotor can rotate slightly.
8

* Remove the solo lug nut that was holding the new rotor in place.
* Put back the wheel. Put the 4 lug nuts back with the pointy edge inside. Start with the bottom one and tighten criss-cross.
9

* Carefully rotate the steering wheel so the front wheels are straight again. Jack up the front-right side slightly in order to remove the 2x4s or jack stands first and then remove the hydraulic jack carefully.
* Follow the above steps for the left-front wheel. Put everything including the hub cap back. Inside the car, press the brake slowly all the way down a few times. Fill the brake fluid reservoir with DOT3 brake fluid if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

If you are not sure, ask a pro to help you. If you think it is too difficult, you can put in a small-gigs ad on Craigslist for free and have someone local help you for under $30.

Use caution and protective gears.

How to Adjust Idle on a Nissan Pathfinder

Idle speed on your Nissan Pathfinder is controlled by the on-board computer and is not normally adjusted during a tune-up. However, if repairs are made that require a replacement throttle body or movement of the idle speed screw, the base idle speed will need to be adjusted so that the computer can accurately control the idle speed.
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Wrench set
Screwdriver set
Code reader
1

Allow the engine to cool completely. The base idle speed must be adjusted with a cool engine on the Nissan Pathfinder. Unplug the idle air control valve located on the driver side, top of the engine, near the throttle body.
2

Start the engine. Turn the idle speed screw on the right side of the throttle body, located on the driver side of the engine, counterclockwise to raise the engine speed or clockwise to lower the engine speed.
3

Turn off the engine and plug the idle air control valve back in. Clear the stored trouble codes that were set by running the engine with the idle air control valve disconnected, using a code reader. Test drive the Pathfinder to verify that it doesn't stall at stops or with the air conditioning on.

How to Replace a Starter on a Nissan Pickup

Nissan trucks and SUVs have common parts

Automotive starters engage the engine flywheel and turn it, which starts your engine. Nissan pickups are equipped with smaller starters than average trucks. If you find yourself in a situation where your Nissan pickup needs a new starter, you can replace it yourself, if you are mechanically inclined and of a mind to do so. You will need a few basic tools, a level place to park and about an hour of free time to get the job done.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Wheel chocks
Floor jack
2 jack stands
Battery wrench
Socket set
Replacement starter
1

Set the parking brake, place chocks in front and back of the front wheels and raise the front end up with the floor jack. Lower it down onto the two jack stands. It is best to place the jack stands as far apart as possible, but make sure their placement doesn't interfere with access to the starter.
2

Disconnect the negative battery cable, using the battery wrench. Make sure to move the cable end to a position where it will not contact the battery terminal.
3

Climb underneath and disconnect the starter wiring, using the socket set. The starter is located where the engine and transmission meet. Familiarize yourself with the appearance of your replacement starter so you know what you're looking for when under the Nissan pickup.
4

Unbolt the starter from the engine, using the socket set. Make sure to support the starter body with one hand while you pull the bolts out with the other hand. Even though this starter is smaller than most, it can still cause injury if it falls on you.
5

Climb out from under the pickup and compare the old starter to the replacement starter. Make sure the connections, bolts holes, nose cone and Bendix drive (the metal gear in the nose of the starter that pushes out to engage the flywheel when you start the truck) are all located in the same positions.
6

Hold the replacement starter in position with one hand and thread the bolts back in with the other hand. Tighten the bolts down using the socket set.
7

Reattach the starter wiring using the socket set. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
8

Lower the Nissan pickup off the jack stands and start it up.

Tips & Warnings

You can take the old starter back to the store where you purchased the replacement unit and get your core charge refunded.

How to Remove Nissan Speakers

If you need to remove the speakers for your Nissan vehicle's stereo, know that their locations can vary depending on the type of vehicle you have. Almost all vehicles have speakers in the front door. The rear speakers' positions will depend on whether you have a car or truck. All speakers are held in place not just with screws but by some type of panel that you will need to remove first.
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Wrench
Towel
Trim stick
Phillips screwdriver
1

Disconnect the cable from the Nissan's negative battery terminal. Smaller cars may use a cable that you'll only need to snap off. On trucks, you might have to loosen a clamp with a wrench.
2

Remove the front door's inner trim panel if it contains the speaker you are trying to remove. This requires you to disconnect the window controls (unclip the crank by rubbing a towel behind it, or pry off the power controls with a trim stick), unscrew all of the panel's mounting screws, lift the panel off the door and disconnect all electrical connectors.
3

Pry off the rear quarter panel trim to remove rear speakers in a Nissan truck. These are usually held in place by pop-type fasteners. Pull off the panel, grabbing and pulling it at the front-side edge first.
4

Remove the rear package shelf if you have speakers behind the back seat in a Nissan car. Pry out the roof pillars with a trim stick, then use the same tool to pry off the shelf, sliding the tool under the shelf's edge until you locate the plastic pins holding the shelf in place.
5

Unscrew the mounting screws for the speaker you are removing. There are usually four screws on one speaker, and they require a Phillips screwdriver.
6

Lift or pull the speaker carefully out of its mounting hole in the vehicle to remove it. Disconnect the electrical connector in the back of the speaker.

Tips & Warnings

Installing a speaker is the reverse of removal. If you are installing a new speaker, you'll need to either make sure its electrical connector fits with the vehicle's or individually connect the wires by crimping or soldering.

How to Prepare to Tow a Nissan Altima

Towing a Nissan Altima improperly could cause damage to your vehicle. If the vehicle is towed the wrong way it could damage the wheel axles or cause damage to other moving parts of the vehicle. Preparing the vehicle for towing also has some rules that you should follow. Not following the preparation instructions could also damage your vehicle. If your vehicle is damaged during a tow, you should contact a local Nissan dealership for repair options.
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
1

Insert the car key in the ignition and turn the key to the ''Off'' position.
2

Position the steering wheel in a straight position.
3

Turn the key in the ignition to the "Acc" position. Push the gear into the "Neutral" position.
4

Turn the key in the ignition to the ''Off'' position. Remove the key from the ignition.

How to Replace a Tie Rod in a Nissan Altima

When the tie rod of the Nissan Altima becomes bent, it manifests itself in the steering. Even after an alignment, your Nissan Altima still won't track straight. You might even notice that your steering feels unstable or has excessive play. The best solution is replacing the tie rod. This is something an amateur mechanic can do with relative ease.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Lug nut wrench
Jack and jack stands
Wrench
Paint or marker
Pen and paper
Tie rods
Torque wrench
1

Buy tie rods for your Nissan Altima. Make sure they're the ones that are specific to your car's model year, as these parts can vary. Also, buy name brand parts instead of the cheaper versions, which might not be as good and the risk isn't worth the little money you'll save.
2

Use a lug nut wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the front tires, then jack up your car. Once you have it safely supported on jack stands, remove the tires.
3

Remove the bolt that connects the tie rod to the steering rack with a wrench or pliers, then mark the position of the other end of the tie rod in the rod adjuster with paint or a marker. Take out the bolt.
4

How to Troubleshoot a Nissan Truck

Nissan trucks can experience problems that may require troubleshooting to resolve.

Nissan trucks refer to a line of pickup trucks manufactured by Nissan Motor Company. Nissan trucks can experience various operational problems that often can be detected and resolved with a little time and some basic troubleshooting techniques.
Engine Won't Start

If the engine in a Nissan truck fails to start, a bad fuel pump relay may be to blame. The fuel pump relay, which manages fuel pump operation during engine startup, can fail due to age or current overload, or it can experience problems that impact vehicle operation negatively. Inspect the relay for signs of damage and replace it as needed.
Rough Idle

A Nissan truck that idles rough can result from vacuum hose leaks or spark plug problems. Inspect the vacuum hoses for signs of wear or tears as well as the spark plugs and plug wires for corrosion or damage, and replace them as needed to restore proper Nissan truck function.
Engine Sputtering

A Nissan truck that sputters, misfires or runs rough can result from a leaking exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) sensor or bad oxygen sensor. Check the EGR sensor for signs of leakage and replace it as needed. The oxygen sensor should be tested with a digital voltmeter based on the Nissan truck manual's specifications to ensure it reaches the proper level of voltage.

How to Replace a Fuel Injector in a Nissan Maxima

The Nissan Maxima fuel injector uses pressure to mix fuel with air. This method rendered carburetors almost entirely obsolete during the late 1980s and allows the same hardware to be used with different fuels due to the fuel injector's programmable firmware. A fuel injector consists only of a nozzle and a valve; it still requires a pump to inject the fuel into the engine.

How to Read a Nissan Part Number

Understanding the Nissan numbering system can help you identify the right parts.

If you read a Nissan part number accurately, you can identify a part without opening the box for inspection. Due to similarities of some parts, understanding the Nissan part number system often serves as a better identifier of the correct part than inspection. Chris Corley, a service adviser with John Howard Motors in Morgantown, West Virginia, says that the Nissan system consists of 10 digits divided into two five-digit parts separated by a hyphen or a space. To interpret the numbers, you can simply divide the series of digits into four parts.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Nissan parts catalog
1

Read the first two digits of the part number. The first two digits refer to the "Section Number" assigned to the part. This number will tell you the main function of the part; for instance, 26 refers to the electrical system. You will need a Nissan parts manual to look up the codes to help identify what each code stands for, not only for the section number, but for the remaining digits as well.
2

Look at the next three digits in the number. This will refer to what is called the "Character Number" assigned to the part. This number works with the "Section Number" to identify the specific classification of the part in relation to the main function of the part; for example, 121 refers to the headlights.
3

Read the first three digits after the hyphen or space. These refer to the "Part Type Number" and identify the model of vehicle on which the part will fit.
4

Look at the last two digits of the part number, called the "Distinction Code." These digits will help you identify assigned variations between parts, such as a part manufactured with a different material than a previous version.

Tips & Warnings

Understanding what each part of the numbering system means will help you understand how to read the number; however, you will have to obtain a Nissan parts catalog to identify specifics related to those numbers. You can pick up a Nissan parts catalog from almost any automotive retail store, a Nissan dealership or online from Nissan.

Always rely on the complete Nissan part number to identify a part accurately. Inspect the part to identify whether it's compatible with your model. In some cases, the part may fit and work for a while but may cause damage to the vehicle or compromise safety.

How to Get Nissan Dealerships to Negotiate

Extensively prepare yourself with information to get the best deal on a Nissan.

Car dealerships and salesmen are notoriously difficult to deal with. Negotiating the best price at a Nissan dealership is no different. Arm yourself with as much information as possible to take away the edge a dealership wants to have on you. If you know exactly what you want, know how much you're willing to pay and then go to a Nissan dealership prepared to negotiate for an extended period of time, you greatly increase the chances of winning the war of wills and negotiating a favorable price.
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
1

Determine the type of car you want or need before going to the Nissan dealership. Not knowing exactly what you want leaves you susceptible to the dealership's suggestions and emotional appeals. Limit the choices and narrow in.
2

Call the Nissan dealership in advance to get the best price on the model you want. This technique may not work immediately because salesmen want to talk face-to-face to personalize the deal in hopes of getting more money from you. An over-the-phone quote reduces interaction with the dealership and increases the chance of negotiating a favorable price.
3

Conduct research to determine the car's base price. This is different than the sticker price, which includes several markups. Also determine which features you want and which you don't need. Resources such as Kelley Blue Book have market prices for new and used cars.
4

Go down to the dealership armed with your information. Make it apparent that you know exactly what you want and that you have conducted research. All dealerships, including Nissan, are less likely to negotiate with an ill-informed person in hopes of taking advantage of their ignorance.
5

Remain patient at all times and be willing to walk away if you cannot get the price you desire. Your patience can outlast the stalling. Walking away demonstrates your bottom line. Both tactics force negotiations to a better price.
6

Limit additional information disclosed to the Nissan dealership. Do not talk about any features that are "must haves" or how much you want a particular car. This information only emboldens salesmen and may stall negotiations.

How to Replace a Radiator in a Nissan Pathfinder

If you take good care of your Nissan Pathfinder, it will last for many years. Part of this means taking care of problems, such as a damaged or corroded radiator, as soon as they arise. If you have some mechanical know-how, you may want to try replacing the radiator yourself. Here's how to replace the radiator in the 1996 to 2004 model Nissan Pathfinder.
Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Jack and jack stand
Wheel blocks
Resealable container
Replacement hoses, if necessary
Replacement radiator
Antifreeze
Distilled water
1

Raise the front of the Pathfinder with a jack and place it securely on a jack stand. Block the rear wheels to keep them from rolling. Remove the undercover and the suspension member stay so you have access to the bottom of the radiator.
2

Locate the plug on the bottom of the radiator. Loosen the plug and let the engine coolant drain into a resealable container.
3

Disconnect the lower radiator hose and upper radiator hose. Take a few minutes to check the hoses. If you notice wear, cracking or bulging, it's a great time to change the hoses.
4

Remove the radiator shrouds, both upper and lower. If your Pathfinder has an automatic transmission, remove the oil cooler hoses. Disconnect the reservoir tank hose and take off the radiator mounting bracket.
5

Lift the radiator carefully out of the vehicle.
6

Install the new radiator and reinstall all engine components in the reverse order that they were removed, being sure to tighten all bolts and clips securely.
7

Fill the engine with a mix of half antifreeze and half distilled water. Leave the radiator cap off, start the engine, and let it warm up for several minutes. Check the fluid levels and top off, if necessary.

Tips & Warnings

If engine coolant isn't old or contaminated, you can reuse it. If you choose not to recycle the coolant, take it to a garage or hazardous waste center where it can be properly disposed of.

Be sure to keep antifreeze in a sealed container out of the reach of children and pets, and if any is spilled, clean it up immediately. Cats and dogs are attracted to the sweet taste of antifreeze, which can be fatal if ingested.

Be sure the engine of your Nissan Pathfinder is completely cool before replacing the radiator because the hot liquid and pressurized steam can cause serious burns. It's also a good idea to wear gloves and protective clothing.

How to Replace a 1998 Nissan Frontier Windshield Washer Motor

The windshield wipers and the window washer pump on your 1998 Nissan Frontier pickup are two separate parts. However, the electrical system ties the units together to ensure that the wipers operate when you activate the washer fluid pump. If you activate the washer fluid mechanism and the wiper work but your washer isn't pumping fluid, you probably have a bad washer pump. This simple electric pump is located underneath your washer fluid reservoir. Changing it should take about 15 minutes.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Socket set
1

Peel back the driver-side front fender-well protective cover by removing the bolts that hold it in place. The washer motor is attached to the bottom of the washer fluid reservoir, on the driver's side of the truck. Remove just enough bolts to be able to access the washer reservoir/pump.
2

Detach the electrical harness from the connector on the pump. Lift up the plastic tabs on the side of the wiring harness and slide it off the pump.
3

Pull the window washer fluid tube off the nozzle on the pump. There is no clamp or connector holding it in place. You can simply pull it straight off.
4

Pull the motor out of the washer fluid tank and out of its bracket by twisting it. There are no bolts or screws connecting the pump.
5

Insert the new pump into the bracket and up into the washer fluid reservoir. Make sure the rubber seal on the top of the pump is fully seated into the bottom of the reservoir to avoid leaks.
6

Place the tube over the nozzle of the new pump and twist it into place. Plug the electrical harness into the socket on the new pump, ensuring the plastic retaining tabs lock into place.
7

Replace the bolts in the fender-well protective cover. Refill the washer reservoir.

Tips & Warnings

Before blaming the pump for the problem, make sure you check all fuses associated with the wipers and pump. Check your owner's manual for the specific location of the fuses.

Another possible problem could be a clogged tube. If you activate the washer and can hear the pump operating, it's likely that the tube is stopped up and you need to replace it.

How to Replace a Part on My Nissan

Ensure you have the necessary tools before replacing parts on your Nissan.

Nissan is one of the world´s largest car manufacturers, producing sedans, trucks and SUVs, with wide distribution throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia. Although it is regarded as a reliable vehicle, Nissans, just like any other vehicle, suffer from extreme weather conditions and other wear and tear, leading to malfunctioning parts, which need replacement to ensure optimum vehicle performance. Depending on the parts that need to be changed, performing maintenance yourself can save time and money, while offering you the opportunity to learn more about how your automobile works.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
1

Determine which part you need to replace -- making assumptions without further research about malfunctioning car components can cause you to make unnecessary repairs to your car, while failing to pinpoint the actual problem. Troubleshoot your car and isolate the part that needs to be replaced. Don´t perform any maintenance until you are sure that you have determined the malfunctioning component.
2

Obtain all of the tools that you will need to complete the replacement job. Purchase a replacement part at a local auto parts store or from an online distributor -- ensure that the replacement part is specific to the model and year of your Nissan.
3

Use a car maintenance manual for guidance when replacing the part in your Nissan. A manual will provide step-by-step instructions for removing and replacing the malfunctioning part and will also indicate the necessary tools and degree of difficulty of the job.
4

Follow all recommended safety precautions as indicated by your car manual vehicle or owner´s manual -- failure to do so can result in serious injury while working on your car.

How to Flush the Radiator in a Nissan Maxima

Keeping a Nissan Maxima in top operating condition requires regular maintenance. For instance, the radiator requires flushing every other year. Otherwise, debris can accumulate in the coolant system and cause an engine to overheat. Doing this maintenance doesn't require much auto mechanic knowledge, just perform some simple steps.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Distilled water
Coolant
Bucket
Sealable container
Gloves

3

Turn the radiator cap one full revolution and then step back from the radiator. Wait for the pressure to release and then remove the radiator cap completely.
4

Position a bucket underneath the radiator directly below the Nissan Maxima's drain plug. This container will need at least a 2-gallon capacity to prevent overflow.
5

Loosen the drain plug and allow the old coolant to flow into the bucket. Once complete, pour the old coolant into a sealable container for proper disposal. Don't leave the coolant exposed as it's toxic to people and pets.
6

Secure the drain plug back to the closed position and fill the radiator with distilled water. Next, open the drain plug and allow the water to drain into the bucket. Keep repeating until the water draining is free of debris. Dispose of the flush water properly when finished.
7

Close the drain plug and refill the radiator with fresh coolant. Fill the radiator until it's within an inch of overflowing.
8

Start the engine of the Nissan Maxima and turn the heater to high. Allow it to run for about 10 minutes. Switch the engine off and check the coolant level. Add more coolant, if necessary. Finally, put the radiator cap back on and close the hood

How to Increase Fuel Mileage on a Nissan Frontier

e

Increase fuel mileage for Nissan Frontier

Flag this photo

When the price of gas rises, it causes a ripple effect that increases the cost of many goods and services across the country. Everyone is looking for more ways to conserve and save money, especially when it comes to truck owners. Based on the "Fuel Economy Guide" published by the U.S. Department of Energy, a Nissan Frontier gets an average of 17 miles to the gallon in the city and about 21 miles to the gallon on the highway, depending on the transmission type and speed. However, there are a number of easy things that you can do to get the best gas mileage out of your Nissan Frontier.
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
1

Accelerate and brake gradually. If you're the first to accelerate at the green light, braking quickly to stop at the red or driving over the speed limit, chances are you're wasting gas. When you brake quickly, this wastes the momentum that your vehicle has built up and the gas that was consumed to reach that speed. Gradually accelerating and braking, and observing the speed limit, could increase your gas mileage by nearly 33% on the highway and 5% in the city.
2

Do not exceed the speed limit. Not only is this safer driving, but it will also help to save gas, especially on the highway. Keep in mind that for every 5 miles over 60 miles per hour you drive, you are using an additional $0.24 per gallon.
3

Use your cruise control. One way to keep from speeding is by setting your cruise control for long trips on the highway. By keeping your speed consistent and avoiding those small fluctuations, you can get better gas mileage out of your Nissan.
4

Clean out your Nissan and remove any unnecessary weight. Trucks are made for hauling, but when you don't need to haul, be sure to remove any extra weight. While this tends to affect smaller cars more, carrying an extra 100 pounds can reduce your miles per gallon up to 2%.
5

Say "no" to idling. Sitting stationary and running your engine still consumes gas. If you're not going anywhere for a while, shut the engine off and save that gas for when you need to travel.
6

Tune your engine regularly. It makes sense that when an engine gets dirty or clogged, or runs roughly, it will use more gas. Your mileage can improve up to 40% by making sure that your engine is regularly tuned and maintained.
7

Check your tire pressure. Tires low on air will cause a vehicle to consume more gas than needed. Your mileage can improve by up to 3.3% simply by keeping tires regularly checked and properly inflated. A sticker on the inside of your door, or your owner's manual, will provide you with information on proper tire pressure.

Tips & Warnings

Cruise control is useful for long trips on the highway but not suggested for driving around town, where there may be many times you need to stop.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Replacement wiper blades for Nissan Sentra
1

Pull the wiper arm away from the windshield so that it is standing up on its own.
2

Push the release tab so that the old wiper blade becomes free. Then simply slide it down the wiper blade track on the wiper arm. Once removed, you may discard.
3

Slide the new wiper blade into the wiper arm track until you hear a "click."
4

5

Check to see if you've properly installed the wiper blades on your Nissan Sentra by using your windshield fluid sprayer located on the steering column of your car. After the fluid is sprayed, the newly installed wiper blades should wipe the windshield clean. If they do not, check to make sure there isn't debris on the rubber of the wiper blade.

Tips & Warnings

If you wish to clean your wiper blades, simply take a rag and some warm water and wipe them down. Do this at the start of each season so that you're prepared for whatever Mother Nature brings your way.
