Insert the code scanner's connector into the OBD port located under the dash to the right of the steering column.

Turn the ignition key to the run position. Make sure the engine is off.

Press the button for "Read" on the code scanner. Within less than 1 minute, the scanner will display all failure codes that are stored in its memory.

Write down the failure codes displayed by the scanner. Cross-reference the codes with the code sheet that comes with the scanner. The codes are displayed with a letter followed by a four-digit number code. Deciphering these codes by cross-referencing them with the code sheet offers an explanation of the failure.

Turn the key off. Correct the failure so that the computer can be reset.

Turn the ignition key on, keeping the engine off. Press the "Erase" button on the scanner. Start the vehicle and allow it to run for 5 minutes. Watch for the check engine light to come back on. How to Replace a Fuel Pump in a Nissan Altima
The fuel pump in a Nissan Altima is electric so you should check the fuses and relays before inspecting the fuel pump itself. Determine the fuel pump that your Nissan Altima will require. This depends on the make and model and engine size of your vehicle. Models made before 2002 will have a 2.4 L KA24DE engine and models made after 2001 may have a 2.5 L QR25DE or a 3.5 L VQ35DE engine.

Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench.

Access the fuel pump by taking out the rear seat and removing the access cover. Unplug the fuel pump's electrical connection and disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump. Remove the locking ring or screws with a socket wrench and disconnect the fuel gauge assembly so that you can disconnect the fuel tube from the fuel gauge.

Remove the fuel pump by holding the connector for the fuel line in one hand while pressing down on the two locking tabs at the same time. Lift the fuel pump out of the fuel tank. Discard the O-ring.

Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit, especially the O-ring. If you have a threaded lock ring, torque it to between 22 and 26 ft. lbs. If you have lock ring with six retaining screws, torque them to between 18 and 22 in. lbs.

Jack the vehicle up and secure it on jackstands. Remove the wheel assemblies. Remove the lower pin bolt from the brake caliper. Rotate the caliper up, allowing access to the torque member. Suspend the caliper from the frame using mechanics wire.

Remove the brake pads by lifting out of the torque member. Remove the hims and the retainers if they are not engaged onto the pads. Install the new pads. Reinstall the shims by engaging them on the torque member. Engage and enstall pad liners to each pad.

Compress the caliper pistons back into the housing using a C-clamp or similar tool. Remove the mechanic's wire and pivot the caliper back into position. Make sure that it is over the torque plate and that the dust boot is not pinched. Install the caliper pin.

Using a torque wrench, torque the bolts to 24 to 31 ft. lbs. Remove any trapped air by pulling, gently on the pin boot. Reinstall the wheel. Lower the vehicle. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery and start the engine. Fill the master cylinder reservoir with brake fluid and put the cap on.

Start the engine and apply the brake pedal 3 to 4 times seating the brake pads. Test Drive the Pathfinder at slow-to-moderate speeds to ensure that maintenance was performed correctly.

The 2005 Nissan Maxima headlight system has two options, a 9012 halogen bulb or a Xenon bulb available only through Nissan. The Xenon or High Intensity Discharge headlight is brighter than the halogen bulb but must be changed by a service tech at Nissan. The halogen system was more common in the Maxima and the 9012 bulbs are available at any auto parts store, allowing the vehicle owner to change the bulbs themselves. Open the hood of your Maxima and locate the large plastic cover on the rear of the headlight assembly. There is a single wire running to it and it is the largest of the sockets and caps on the headlight assembly.

Rotate the headlight bulb cap counterclockwise and remove it from the housing. Lay it aside then disconnect the electrical connector from the rear of the bulb by pulling it straight off the bulb. Unlock the spring clip that is retaining the bulb in the housing and swing it out of the way.

Remove the bulb from the headlight assembly and discard it. Install a new 9012 bulb into the housing, being careful not to touch the glass on the new bulb while installing it. Oils from your hands will cause the halogen bulb to overheat and fail.

Swing the locking spring clip over the bulb and hook it under the catch on the headlight assembly. Install the wiring harness connector on the back of the bulb and install the plastic headlight bulb cap on the rear of the headlight assembly. Turn the cap clockwise until it is tight.

Turn the headlight switch on and verify that the bulb is working. Cycle through the high and low beam positions, checking them both then shut off the lights.

How to Install Back Speakers in a Nissan Maxima
Nissan Maxima models come equipped with factory-installed stereo systems. However, many audio enthusiasts will replace components of the factory stereo, including the rear speakers, with high-performance aftermarket equipment. The back speakers are often one of the first sets of speakers that drivers change, since aftermarket speakers usually have improved bass response.

Open the trunk of the vehicle, and crawl in on your back so that you can see the underneath of the vehicle's rear deck. You'll see two speakers mounted underneath the rear deck.

Remove the four screws surrounding each of the speakers. These screws don't hold the speaker in, but instead secure the grille that covers each of the speakers on the inside of the car.

Go into the back seat of the car. Pull each of the grilles off the rear deck by lifting straight up from the speaker. This reveals each of the speakers.

Undo the screws holding the speakers into the rear deck, and then pull the speakers out of the rear deck. Each speaker will have a wiring plug clipped to it. Pull the wiring plugs out from the sockets on the factory speakers.

Cut off the wiring plugs on the factory speakers. Strip 1/2 inch of insulation off each lead so that you have 1/2 inch of bare wire on each lead. Crimp quick slide connectors that match the size of the new speaker's terminals onto each lead by sliding each connector onto the bare wire and then crimping the connector in place.

Slide the quick slide connectors onto the terminals of the new speakers, then place the speakers into the openings. Screw the new speakers into place with the screws you removed earlier.

Replace the grilles onto the speakers, and then go back into the trunk and secure the grilles.

Slide the quick slide connectors onto the terminals of the new speakers, then place the speakers into the openings. Screw the new speakers into place with the screws you removed earlier.

Replace the grilles onto the speakers, and then go back into the trunk and secure the grilles.
How to Change Automatic Transmission Fluid in a Nissan Sentra
You should change the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles if you drive the car under normal conditions. However, under severe services, you need to change the fluid every 15,000 miles. The following covers Nissan Sentra models from 1982 through 1996.

Look for a drain plug on the transmission pan. Some models will have one, others won't. If there isn't a drain plug, continue to Step 3. If there is a drain plug, put a large drain pan beneath the plug, remove the drain plug and allow the fluid to drain. Skip to Step 4.

Use a socket wrench to loosen the retaining screws on the pan until you can gently pull one corner of the pan down. Take care not to bend or damage the fluid pan. Fluid will begin to drain. Remove the fluid pan retaining screws and take the pan off the transmission. Remove the old gasket and discard it. Clean the pan thoroughly and set it aside to air dry.

Remove the control valve body, oil strainer plate bolts and the separator plate. If the plate shows any scratches, dents or other damage, then you should replace it. Otherwise, you can reinstall the same separator plate.

Apply a thin bead of RTV sealant along the pan flange. The sealant should go on the outside of the boltholes, rather than on the inside. Align the new gasket onto the fluid pan and reinstall the fluid pan onto the transmission. Tighten the retaining screws evenly to 43 to 61 inch pounds with a torque wrench.

Measure the amount of transmission fluid that you drained from the transmission. Add the same amount of new Dexron II automatic transmission fluid to the transmission through the filler tube using a clean funnel. Replace the dipstick.

Start the engine, allow it to idle for a few minutes and shift the transmission through the gears, ending in "Park." Check the fluid level, which should be between the "H" and "L" marks on the dipstick. Add sufficient fluid if needed. Otherwise, replace the dipstick, close the hood and turn off the engine.

How to Replace EGR Valve on Nissan Sentra
Your Nissan Sentra's Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve is designed to send the unburned emissions fumes back into the engine so it can burn as much of the fuel as possible. When the wheel bearings begin to wear out on your Sentra, you will hear a "whistle" coming from that wheel while you are driving. Normally, the faster you move, the louder the "whistle". You should check the Sentra's wheel bearings every 30,000 miles. However, most likely, they will need to be replaced after 60,000 miles.

Install the new wheel bearing. Tap the new bearing into the hub using a rubber mallet. Make sure you are using a rubber mallet so that you do not damage the new bearing.

Reassemble the hub assembly, brake assembly, and put the wheel back on and tighten the lug nuts so that the wheel sits flush against the wheel hub. Installation is the reverse of removal.

An extension is needed to remove the 17mm screws
I was looking for instruction on how to change the front brake pads and the rotors on my 12 year old 97 Nissan Sentra GXE. I found some generic instructions and videos. Some of them were not very helpful and some had incorrect information. Here is my attempt to illustrate the process.
Steps to change the front brake pads and rotors on a 1997 Nissan Sentra. It is very easy.

* Buy the rotors from local auto parts store so you can easily return them if necessary.
* Do your online shopping first and find the best deal so you can ask for a price match.
* I paid $33 for a pair of front brake rotors at Oreilly's.
* Open the brake fluid reservoir top.
* Engage the emergency brake and park on a flat surface.
* Put 2 bricks on each of the back wheel, one in the front, one in the back so the car does not move when the front wheel is lifted.
* Take the hub cap off.
* Loosen all 4 lug nuts slightly before lifting the front wheel. That helps minimize jerking of the car while lifted.

* Lift one of the front wheels. I did the right one first.
* I used the 2 ton hydraulic jack that I bought a few years ago on the Black Friday sale.
* Slide in a bunch of 2x4s or a jack stand under the car to hold the car up.
* Lower the hydraulic jack's pressure so that most of the weight is on the jack stand or the 2x4s but keep the hydraulic jack lifted just as a backup.
* Now loosen all 4 lug nuts using the factory provided crow-bar like tool.
* Before you remove the wheel, take a chalk and mark one of the lug nuts and the corresponding screw and the position on the wheel so you can put it back exactly the way it was before.
* Remove the wheel.

* Now, carefully open the car door and move the steering wheel all the way to the right so the bare wheel assembly moves to the right. You will see the parts better that way.
* You will need a 14 MM socket. Use a long pipe if you have to in order to get leverage and unscrew if needed.
* I saw on a Youtube video that a guy was hammering the ratchet to loosen the 2 caliper screws. It is not recommended. I actually broke a ratchet that way. Always use a long pipe to extend the handle of the ratchet.
* Carefully remove the caliper assembly and hang it with a clothes hanger. See photo. Make sure the brake fluid lines are not stressed.

* Using a C-clamp slightly press back the round brake pressure apparatus. This step was not needed for me since I was not replacing the brake pads which were less than a year old and hardly used.
* Remove the brake pads and make sure the 2 little spring pins are also removed.
* Clean the assembly that holds the brake pads.
* Now you need to remove the assembly that holds the brake pads.
* You will need a 17 MM socket and a 2 or 3 inch extension. The extension is needed because there is a screw that is on the way to the caliper screw/socket. See photo.
* These 2 screws were very hard to remove on my 12 year old car.

* I carefully sprayed the screws with lubricant that is specially made to loosen rusted nuts and bolts.
* Then I tried to tighten the screw a little bit instead of loosening. That helped.
* Then I attached a pipe to extend the ratchet handle and that helped a lot with unscrewing both screws.
* Take the old rotor off. It should come off easily. If not, very gently tap it with a hammer.
* Spray the new rotor with any Acetone based brake cleaner and remove as much oil from it as possible. Without removal of the oil, the rotor will smoke when used the first time. I used some nail polish remover to do the cleaning.

* Use a dab of a high temperature brake grease on all screws after cleaning them. You can buy a grease tube for $1.
* Slap in the new rotor. Hold the new rotor in position by screwing in one of the lower lug nuts.
* Clean the brake pad holder assembly and screw it back using the 17 MM screws. Make sure these screws are very tight.
* Clean the caliper assembly. Put the shims on the back of the pads and use the high temperature brake grease on the back of the shims.

* Slap in the new brake pads. The pad with the long metal tab goes in the back. Put back the 2 pin springs. See photo.
* Put back the caliper assembly. Put the 14 MM caliper screws back and make sure the caliper assembly can move side by side slightly. Make sure the rotor can rotate slightly.

* Remove the solo lug nut that was holding the new rotor in place.
* Put back the wheel. Put the 4 lug nuts back with the pointy edge inside. Start with the bottom one and tighten criss-cross.

* Carefully rotate the steering wheel so the front wheels are straight again. Jack up the front-right side slightly in order to remove the 2x4s or jack stands first and then remove the hydraulic jack carefully.
* Follow the above steps for the left-front wheel. Put everything including the hub cap back. Inside the car, press the brake slowly all the way down a few times. Fill the brake fluid reservoir with DOT3 brake fluid if necessary.

If you are not sure, ask a pro to help you. If you think it is too difficult, you can put in a small-gigs ad on Craigslist for free and have someone local help you for under $30.

How to Adjust Idle on a Nissan Pathfinder
Idle speed on your Nissan Pathfinder is controlled by the on-board computer and is not normally adjusted during a tune-up. However, if repairs are made that require a replacement throttle body or movement of the idle speed screw, the base idle speed will need to be adjusted so that the computer can accurately control the idle speed.
