How to Change the Brakes on a Nissan 2005 Xterra

Brake calipers with brake pads installed.

The braking system on the Nissan Xterra is made up of four components: the braking rotor, the brake pads, the brake caliper and the brake lines. When changing the brakes on the 2005 Nissan Xterra, it is critical that you reassemble the system correctly to avoid any safety issues involving ineffective brakes. One specific area of interest is the caliper piston. The piston must be in the correct position to facilitate proper braking once the replacement has been completed.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Tire iron
Tire blocks
Lifting jack
Jack stands
13mm wrench
10mm wrench
Drip pan
Wire brush
Brake pads
Caliper
Rotor
Brake cleaner spray
Clean towel
Brake fluid
1

Park the Nissan Xterra in a location that will allow you to work safely on both sides of the vehicle. Apply the parking brake and put the transmission in "park." Place tire blocks behind the rear wheels.
2

Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel with the socket end of the tire iron.
3

Place the lifting jack beneath the frame of the Xterra and lift the vehicle. Place jack stands beneath the frame of the Xterra and lower the vehicle onto the stands.
4

Remove the lug nuts and the wheels from the wheel studs. Locate the two caliper bolts, on the inside wall of the caliper (closest to the frame of the vehicle), and remove them with the 13mm wrench.
5

Pull the caliper away from the brake rotor. Disconnect the brake line from the caliper with the 10mm wrench. Place the detached brake line into the drip pan on the ground below, to catch any leaking brake fluid.
6

Pull the rotor from the wheel bolts. If the rotor is stuck to the wheel bolts or the steering knuckle behind it, spray chain lubricant on the points of connection and wait for the bond to loosen. If you plan to use the rotor again, be careful not to damage the disc when removing it. If your intention is to discard the rotor, you're free to be more forceful in removing it
7

Place the brake pads onto the new caliper. The pads clip onto the sides of the caliper by thin metal clips. Connect the brake line to the new caliper and tighten the brake line clamp with the 10mm wrench.
8

Spray the new rotor with brake cleaner. Wipe the excess cleaner and packing oil from every surface of the rotor. Place the new rotor onto the wheel bolts. Return the caliper to its position around the rotor. Tighten the caliper bolts with the 13mm wrench.
9

Put the wheel back onto the wheel bolts and screw on the lug nuts by hand.
10

Lift the Xterra with the jack, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts with the socket end of the tire iron.
11

Press the brake pedal three times, holding it fully depressed after the third time. Repeat this step twice more.
12

Lift the hood of the Nissan Xterra and locate the master cylinder, near the windshield on the driver's side. Remove the cap from the master cylinder and fill the container with brake fluid until full. Replace the cap and close the hood.

Tips & Warnings

Pressing the brake pedal after changing the brakes will force brake fluid into the new caliper and position the piston properly. The first few depressions of the brake pedal will offer little resistance.
