How to Replace Struts in a 1990 Nissan Maxima

The struts on the 1990 Nissan Maxima serve as a cushion between the road and the body of the vehicle. As you traverse rough terrain, the struts absorb the impact to provide the driver and passengers with a smooth ride. Over time, the gas inside the struts leak out and you notice you start feeling all of the bumps you didn't feel before. The struts fit inside the oil springs. The struts are called "coil over struts" When you change the struts, you remove the coil from the strut and reuse the coils. Because of this, you need a spring compressor tool. If you do not own one, you can usually rent them from an auto parts store.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Tire iron
Jack
Jack stand
Socket set
Spring compressor tool
1

Loosen the lug nuts on the front driver's side wheel using the tire iron supplied with the Maxima.
2

Place a jack under the frame directly behind the front wheel, jack up the car until you can place a jack stand under the frame and then lower the Maxima onto the jack stand.
3

Remove the lug nuts and pull the front wheel off the Maxima.
4

Open the engine hood and remove the bolt that secure the strut to the strut tower using a socket and ratchet.
5

Remove the lower bolt that secures the strut to the wheel assembly using a socket and ratchet.
6

Pull the lower half of the strut free of the wheel assembly and then pull down to pull the threaded post on top of the strut free from the strut tower.
7

Connect the spring compressor tool onto each side of the spring and compress the spring with the tool until there is at least a one-inch cap between the top of the spring and the spring retaining cap on top of the strut.
8

Remove the bolt that secures the spring retaining cap onto the strut using a socket and ratchet. Pull the cap off the strut.
9

Remove the spring from the strut and place it onto the new strut.
10

Place the spring retaining cap onto the strut and tighten it into place using the socket and ratchet.
11

Loosen the spring compressor tool on the springs and remove them.
12

Slide the threaded post of the strut up into the strut tower and seat the bottom of the strut into the wheel assembly.
13

Secure the bottom of the strut using the bolt, socket and ratchet.
14

Secure the top of the strut to the strut tower using the bolt, socket and ratchet.
15

Place the wheel back onto the Maxima, thread the lug nuts onto the wheel studs using your fingers. Tighten each lug nut a quarter turn using the tire iron.
16

Jack the Maxima up, remove the jack stands and lower the car to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts using the tire iron.
17

Repeat the process on the passenger side of the vehicle.
