How to Replace Valve Cover Gasket in a Nissan Pathfinder

If your Nissan Pathfinder is leaking oil and the engine is smoking then you may need to change the valve cover gasket. This should stop the oil leak and the smoke, and should allow you to have a smooth drive in your Pathfinder. If you have over 100,000 miles on your Pathfinder then you definitely want to perform this maintenance.
Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Spark plug tool
Automotive engine cleaner
Valve cover gasket sealer
Flat head screwdriver
10 mm socket
Valve cover gasket
Valve cover gasket kit
5/8 to 3/8 spark plug socket and wrench
1

Allow the car to cool. Disconnect the battery terminal. Remove the right side vent screen top extension. Disconnect the ignition coil with power transistor and its wiring and brackets.
2

Unplug the electrical connections from the intake manifold runner control actuator. Remove the spark plug wires, valve cover bolts and the valve cover. Unfasten the actuator retaining the screws. Disconnect the left hand side coil wires and spark plug wires.
3

Remove the heated positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. Remove the heated oxygen sensor plug and the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor. Disconnect the ignition coil with power transistor and its wiring and bracket. Remove the valve cover bolts, the valve cover and the old valve cover gasket. Clean the valve cover seating area with automotive engine cleaner and place the new gasket in the gasket seating area.
4

Replace the parts that were removed and disconnected by reversing the steps. Replace the valve cover gasket and tighten the bolts, in sequence, ensuring not to over tighten. Put back the ignition coil with power transistor and its wiring and bracket, the heated PCV valve, the heated oxygen sensor plug and the DPFE sensor.
5

Check the oil stick to determine the oil level and fill the oil container to make sure that the car has enough oil in it. Start the car and let it idle for a while. The maintenance is now complete on your Nissan Pathfinder.

  1. Hello, I like your write-up for the Nissan PF valve cover gasket change but can you tell me waht year vehicle you are working on? I have a 2002 and it is my understanding the intake manifold has to come off as well. In your article you did not mention removing the I.M. so I'm wondering what year you are talking about.

    Thank you,
