How to Change Rotors on a 2001 Nissan Xterra

You can replace the brake rotors on the Nissan Xterra with basic tools found in most toolboxes.

As with any cars, the brake rotors on the Nissan Xterra use friction to slow and stop the car. The brake caliper pushes a piston out when you depress the brake pedal. When this piston comes out, it pushes the back brake pad against the rotor disc. The disc then goes against the front brake pad and the Nissan stops. It does not take very long, about thirty minutes, to replace each rotor.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Automobile jack
Wheel chocks
Jack stand
Lug wrench
Wire ties
Pliers
Socket set
Turkey baster
Drain pan
Brake fluid
1

Open the engine compartment and siphon ½ of the brake fluid using a turkey baster. Place the fluid in the drain pan for recycling. Raise the front of the Nissan on the side you are starting with using the automobile jack. Place a jack stand under the Nissan near the jacking point and raise it to the frame.
2

Loosen the lug nuts with the lug wrench and remove the wheel from the Nissan. Remove the retaining pins from the caliper using a socket and ratchet. Secure the caliper to the strut using a wire tie. Do not allow the caliper to hang by the brake hose or you will stretch and damage it.
3

Remove the brake rotor from the wheel assembly. Install a new rotor on the wheel. Cut the wire tie securing the caliper to the strut using the pliers. Place the caliper in the mounting cradle and tighten the retaining pins with a socket and ratchet. Install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench.
4

Remove the jack stand from under the Nissan. Lower the Xterra to the ground. Repeat the procedure on the other wheel. Pump the brakes several times when the project is complete to seat the brake pads on the rotor.

Tips & Warnings

Do not reuse any brake fluid that you drain from the master cylinder or you will contaminate the brake system.
