How to Remove the Stereo From a Nissan Xterra

The Nissan Xterra was built to be an SUV that could go off road and on with little difficulty, but the stock stereo system tends to be a bit lacking. Replacing the factory unit with an aftermarket model isn't a complicated task, and can greatly improve the sound quality in the SUV, as well as the overall feel of driving the vehicle. In this case, the project vehicle is a 2000 Nissan Xterra, but the process is similar for other vehicles as well.
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Phillips head screwdriver
1

Pull out the ashtray on the center of the dashboard just below the stereo, then hold down the metal tab in the middle to release it from the dash. Then unscrew the two Phillips head screws under the tray using the Phillips head screwdriver.
2

Grip the black plastic panel around the stereo by the ashtray and pull it out from the bottom, releasing the tabs that hold the bezel in place. Pull the bezel away from the dashboard and set it to the side.
3

Remove the four Phillips head screws that hold the factory stereo to the dashboard with the Phillips head screwdriver. Pull out the stereo and unplug the wiring harness and stock antenna from the rear by pressing the tab on the harness to pull it out, and just pulling on the antenna lead.

Tips & Warnings

Although the bezel may seem like it doesn't want to come off, it's just held in place by clips. If you get nervous, you can use a flat-bladed plastic tool to pry the panel out from the bottom and work your way around until it's free.
