How to Read 1984 Nissan 300ZX Computer Codes

Nissan produced the 1984 300ZX as the successor the 280Z. The 300ZX is powered by a six-cylinder engine available in both turbo and naturally aspirated versions. The engine diagnostics computer system in the300ZX provides significant information regarding items such as fuel and air mixture, fuel pump status, voltage status, engine status and more. The system also allows mechanics or do-it-yourselfers to diagnose problems with engine performance.

Phillips screwdriver
Flat blade screwdriver, small

Remove the two Phillips screws holding the lower kick panel on the passenger side. Gently pry the kick panel loose and store in a safe place.

Insert the flat blade screwdriver into the hole on the top of the computer and turn the test selector fully counterclockwise.

Turn the ignition to the "On" position but do not start the car. Verify both green and red LED lights are illuminated on the top of the computer.

Turn the test selector fully clockwise with the flat blade screwdriver.

Start the car in neutral and drive the car for a few minutes at speeds greater than 6 miles per hour.

Park the car and turn the ignition to the "on" position, stopping the engine.

View the LED lights to retrieve the error codes. The red LED will blink to identify the first digit of the error code. The green led will blink to identify the second digit of error code. Three red blinks and two green blinks would signify the error code "32."

Write each code down to reference in the factory service manual. The factory service manual will explain what each code means, telling you what's wrong with the engine. More than one code sequence might display; the codes will repeat after all codes have been displayed.

Turn the test selector fully counterclockwise to place the computer in normal mode.

Replace the kick panel and tighten the two Phillips screws with the Phillips screwdriver.
