How to Replace a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder PCV Valve

The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve in a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder acts as an emissions regulation device by recirculating hazardous fumes back into the engine. The fumes result from the combustion of fuel within the Pathfinder's engine. Performing maintenance on the PCV valve yourself not only saves you money, but also keeps pollution out of the environment. The black valve looks like a 3-inch-long plug. Locate the valve on the top, back portion of the engine block. It will have a black rubber hose connected to it.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Needle-nose pliers
1

Unlatch, then open the hood of the Nissan Pathfinder.
2

Grasp the black, rubber hose plugged into the PCV valve and remove it with a firm pull.
3

Position the needle-nose pliers such that one prong is inside the valve, while the other rests outside the valve. Squeeze together the pliers and pull out the valve. Set the old PCV valve aside.
4

Push the new PCV valve into the hole in the engine. Connect the black, rubber hose to the valve to complete the job.

Tips & Warnings

Be sure the engine is cool before replacing the PCV valve to avoid accidental burns.
