How to Replace Headlamps in Nissan Xterras

Nissan Xterra headlamps do not need to be adjusted after bulb replacement.

The Nissan Xterra uses halogen headlight bulbs that can burn out over time. Replacing a bad headlight bulb requires access to the headlight assembly through the Xterra's engine compartment, but does not require the removal of the entire headlight assembly. Armed with a wrench and a replacement bulb, an amateur home mechanic can replace a Nissan Xterra headlamp light bulb safely at home without the assistance of a mechanic.

1

Open the hood of the Xterra and disconnect the negative battery cable. This helps prevent potential injury resulting from an electrical shock.
2

Locate the wiring harness connected to the back of the light bulb socket and carefully pull to remove it from the socket.
3

Remove the bulb socket from the headlight assembly by turning the socket counterclockwise, and then gently pulling it free.
4

Pull to remove the bad bulb from the socket and carefully insert the new bulb. Do not drop the bulbs or touch the bulb glass, only the base.
5

Insert the bulb socket into the headlight assembly, turning clockwise to lock it in place.
6

Connect the wiring harness to the back of the light bulb socket by pressing until it snaps into place.
7

Reconnect the negative battery cable, power on the Xterra, and then turn on the headlights to test the new bulb.

Tips & Warnings

You may find it difficult to reach the headlight assembly. Loosening the battery bolts slightly and sliding the battery out of the way or removing the air filter may make reaching the headlight assemblies easier.

Be sure not to touch the bulbs. Your finger oils can cause a halogen bulb to overheat, failing prematurely.
