How to Replace a 2003 Nissan Sentra Thermostat

Ensure your 2003 Nissan Sentra stays on the road for years to come.

The 2003 Nissan Sentra is a sporty midsized sedan. However, since it was manufactured in 2003, it's very possible that basic maintenance repairs need to be completed to prevent engine failure down the road. Corrosion within the cooling system of an engine can cause failure to the thermostat. If the thermostat corrodes and fails, it can cause the engine to overheat. This can lead to thousands of dollars in repairs. However, with a quick change of the thermostat, you can ensure your 2003 Nissan Sentra stays on the road for years to come.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need
2003 Nissan Sentra thermostat
PVC gasket maker
Adjustable wrench
1

Find the thermostat cover by locating the radiator hose that extends from the top of the radiator. Follow that hose until you get to the end that connects to the engine. The piece of metal it is connected to is the cover that protects the Sentra's thermostat.
2

Remove the radiator hose from the cover by loosening the clamp that holds it to the cover by using an adjustable wrench. Slide the clamp down the radiator hose so it doesn't get lost.
3

Remove the cover from the engine by loosening the two bolts that hold it in place with an adjustable wrench. Remove the cover by lifting it off the Nissan engine.
4

Pull the thermostat out of the engine. It is not bolted into place. Remove the thermostat gasket from the engine. You may need a scraper or a razor blade to work the gasket loose.
5

Place the new thermostat into the engine by setting it on the recessed lip located inside the hole. The correct end should be placed into the hole to ensure the engine heats properly.
6

Add a small amount of PVC gasket maker to the bottom of the thermostat cover. A moderate amount should be used to completely coat the bottom of the cover. Allow the PVC to dry for 10 to 15 minutes and then place the cover onto the Nissan engine and bolt the cover back into place.
7

Place the radiator hose back onto the cover and tighten the clamp into place with the adjustable wrench. Your 2003 Nissan Sentra is now ready to use again.
