How to Install an Oxygen Sensor for a Nissan Maxima

Replace the oxygen sensor on your Nissan Maxima.

The oxygen sensor (O2S) on your Nissan Maxima reads the oxygen content from the emission gasses going to the catalytic converter. The computer control system on your vehicle uses this information to correct the air-fuel mixture for the current driving conditions. Replacing a bad oxygen sensor or sensors is an easy procedure following these simple steps. This guide applies to most Nissan Maxima models.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Floor jack and 2 jack stands Ratchet and oxygen sensor socket Penetrating oil Anti-seize compound
1

Park your car in a safe place with a level surface. Open the hood and disconnect the black, negative battery cable.
2

Locate the oxygen sensor. Following the exhaust pipe connected to the exhaust manifold, you will find the sensor threaded into the pipe, just before the catalytic converter. On some models, you will find a second oxygen sensor mounted on the other side of the catalytic converter.
3

Raise the front of the vehicle if you need more room to reach or have access to the sensor. Use a floor jack and safely support the vehicle on two jack stands.
4

Unplug the O2S sensor electrical connector. Press the lock tab or tabs and separate the connector.
5

Remove the oxygen sensor using a ratchet and oxygen sensor socket. Some sensors are hard to remove below 100 degrees F. If you find it hard to remove the unit in your vehicle, you have two options. Warm up the engine to operating temperature and remove the sensor. Or apply penetrating oil to the sensor threads following the product manufacturer's instructions.
6

Apply anti-seize compound to the threads of the new oxygen sensor. Start the sensor into the exhaust pipe by hand to avoid damage to the threads. Tighten the sensor using the ratchet and oxygen sensor socket.
7

Plug the sensor electrical connector, lower the vehicle and connect the black, negative battery cable.

Tips & Warnings

Consult your owner's manual or vehicle service manual to identify or locate components. You can buy one at most auto parts stores or consult one for free at most public libraries.

It only takes a few minutes for the exhaust system and related components in your vehicle to reach very high temperatures. Whenever you have to work under these conditions on your car, use caution to avoid skin burns and other injuries.
