How to Remove a 2000 Nissan Maxima Alternator

The Nissan Maxima, like almost all cars on the road today, uses an alternator to generate electricity from the drive belt of the motor. Occasionally, though, the alternator will stop working and won't charge your battery, leaving you stuck somewhere when you need to start your car. To fix it, you'll need to replace the alternator--but first, you have to remove it. In this case, the project vehicle is a 2000 Nissan Maxima with the 1.8l engine, but the process is similar for other vehicles as well.
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Open-end wrench set
3/8-inch ratchet and socket
1

Pop the hood and locate the battery. Use an open-end wrench to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery, then follow that with the positive terminal.
2

Unbolt the positive terminal connection from the back of the alternator using an open-end wrench. Then unplug the wiring harness on the alternator and set it to the side.
3

Loosen the drive belt adjusting bolt near the alternator, using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket to relieve tension on the belt. Then unbolt the alternator from the engine bracket using the ratchet and lift it out from under the drive belt, away from the engine.

Tips & Warnings

Always make sure to disconnect the battery at the positive and negative terminals before working on the alternator. Otherwise, you risk grounding out the battery and starting a fire.
