How to Replace the 2000 Nissan Altima Oxygen Sensor

A 2000 Nissan Altima's sensors and controls work very closely with the vehicle's engine, transmission and other systems to maintain efficiency and the lowest possible emissions. The oxygen sensors in your Altima detect the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust compared to the other products of combustion, or exhaust gasses. Thee sensors on the Altima may occasionally malfunction and need replacement.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need
Oxygen sensor wrench
Anti-seize compound
1

Locate the two oxygen sensors on either side of the Altima's catalytic converter on the exhaust manifold. The Altima's oxygen sensor is gold and shaped liked a spark plug.
2

Remove the Altima's wiring harness from the end of the faulty oxygen sensor using your fingers. Do not damage the end of Altima's wiring harness.
3

Remove the oxygen sensor from the manifold using the oxygen sensor wrench.
4

Apply the anti-seize compound to the threads of the new oxygen sensor.
5

Install the new oxygen sensor to the manifold using the oxygen sensor wrench. Re-attach the Altima's wiring harness to the new oxygen sensor using your fingers.

Tips & Warnings

Let the Altima run for five minutes. An oxygen sensor can become stuck on the Altima's manifold. A warm oxygen sensor is easier to remove than a cold one. Use caution, as the exhaust system only takes a few minutes to get dangerously hot.
