How to Replace Emergency Brakes in a Nissan Pathfinder

The original purpose of emergency brakes was to stop your vehicle in an emergency. Fortunately, the brakes on a Nissan Pathfinder rarely fail, and the emergency brakes are most commonly used to keep the vehicle from moving while parked. The most likely type of failure for emergency brakes is when the brake cable rusts and seizes after being unused for a long period of time.

Socket wrench set
1

Determine which type of emergency brakes your Nissan Pathfinder will need. Emergency brakes typically function by activating the regular braking system on the driving wheels. The emergency brakes for the Nissan Pathfinder may use disc or drum brakes on the rear wheels.
2

Disengage the parking brake pedal completely and raise the vehicle. Remove the rear wheel and tire assembly with a socket wrench.
3

Remove the disc rotor if you have rear disc brakes and disconnect the rear half shaft with a socket wrench. Unplug the anti-lock braking system (ABS) sensor from the harness connector and remove the ABS sensor wire from the grommet mounts.
4

Slide the brake drum from the rear axle if you have drum brakes. Remove the hold-down pin retainers and detach the leading shoe followed by the trailing shoe. Disconnect the brake adjuster and parking brake cable from the toggle lever on the rear shoe with a socket wrench.
5

Apply brake grease to the required contact points on the new disc rotor or brake drum and install it by reversing the removal procedure.
6

Adjust the parking brake pedal by driving the vehicle forward at 25 mph and apply the parking brake with a force of 44 pounds for 30 seconds.
