How to Replace a Headlight Bulb in a Nissan Pathfinder

Should you discover the headlamp bulb in your Nissan Pathfinder has burnt out, you can replace it yourself. This job doesn't require any special tools, but you'll need to get the appropriate replacement bulb before starting. These instructions don't apply to models made before 1996.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
Things You'll Need
#9007 replacement bulb (2005 and later models)
#9003 replacement bulb (1996-2004 models)
1

Shut the Pathfinder's engine off and engage the emergency brake for added safety. Also, make sure its headlights are switched off.
2

Open the hood using the primary and auxiliary hood release latches. Then, disconnect the negative battery cable.
3

Disconnect the electrical connector from the back side of the bulb.
4

Take the rubber cap off the back of the bulb, and then push and turn the retaining pin to free it from the assembly (2004 and earlier models only.)
5

Turn the bulb retaining ring counterclockwise and remove it from the headlight assembly (2005 and later models only.)
6

Remove the old bulb from the headlight assembly and dispose of it carefully to prevent shattering its shell. Then, install the new bulb and replace the retaining ring or pin.
7

Reattach the electrical connector and negative battery cable, and then switch on the headlights to make sure they work before closing the hood.

Tips & Warnings

Check the diagram in Section 8 of your Pathfinder Owner's Manual if you're unsure of which bulb to replace.

Don't scratch or smudge the new bulb's lens as you install it.
