The engine compartment relay box in your 2003 Nissan Maxima is located on the left side of the engine compartment behind the engine coolant reservoir. Disconnect the battery. An accidental electrical surge during repair could hurt you or cause costly damage to your Nissan Maxima, so never work on your relays without first disconnecting the power to your car.

Open the relay box by squeezing on the tab at the right side and lifting the cover off. Unplug the relay associated with your malfunctioning device.

Check the relay and box for dirt, corrosion or damage. Clean, fix or repair any area as needed.

Examine your relay's circuit board solder for microscopic cracks with a magnifying glass before replacing it with your new relay. Soldered joints can crack causing resistance in the relay and a voltage drop. Consider resoldering the joints to restore the non-working relay to working condition.

Plug the relay back into its socket (if you decided to repair it with soldering) or plug in the new relay.

Replace the box cover and reconnect your battery. Check if your new relay has corrected the malfunction by turning on the Nissa Maxima and the associated device.
Tips & Warnings
Always use the correct relay size and amperage instead of using temporary "fixes," as higher capacity relays or replacement wires can cause electrical surges that may damage wiring or start fires.
Confirm that your replacement relay fits securely within its socket as current running through a loose relay can cause the relay to overheat or the outer plastic casing and relay socket housing to melt.
