How to Tighten 2000 Nissan Maxima Belts

The 2000 Nissan Maxima comes equipped with two different belts: One of the belts controls the alternator and the water pump; the other belt controls the power steering pump and the air conditioner pump. These two drive belts travel around pulleys as the crankshaft pulley turns. Once the belts start to exhibit cracks on their inner sides, they will have to be replaced.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
Things You'll Need
1/2-inch drive ratchet
1/2-inch drive socket set
1

Park the 2000 Nissan Maxima in a safe working area. Open the hood and lock it in place.
2

Locate the two drive belts on the front of the engine. Each belt has an adjustment bracket used for tightening and loosening the belts. The adjustment bracket for the alternator belt is near the upper idler pulley. There is a locking bolt on the front of the bracket and an adjustment bolt at the end of the bracket. The adjustment bracket to the power steering bracket is located on the back of the power steering pump.
3

Loosen the locking bolt in the center of the upper idler pulley with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet and a socket.
4

Turn the bolt head at the end of the adjustment bracket clockwise with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet and a socket to tighten the belt. Once that the belt is tight, screw the locking bolt back down until it is tight.
5

Loosen the locking bolt on the back of the power steering pump. Turn the adjustment bolt at the end of the power steering pump adjustment bracket clockwise with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet and a socket until the belt is tight.
6

Tighten the locking bolt back down tight on the power steering pump adjustment bracket. Check the tightness of both belts.
7

Crank the engine and inspect the belts as the engine is running, to ensure that the belts stay seated inside each of the pulleys they travel on. Turn the engine off.

Tips & Warnings

The belts should have no more than one inch of slack in the belt to be considered properly tight.

Always wear safety glasses when working inside the engine compartment.
