How to Install a Stereo in a Nissan Maxima

The Nissan Maxima is the flagship of the Nissan car line with more power and comfort options than its other cars. Upgrading the stereo in the Maxima takes more mechanical ability than most cars because of trim removal. This is a good afternoon project and is a straightforward installation. These instructions cover the 1989 through 1993 model years.

Philips screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver
Wiring harness adaptor
Nissan antenna adapter

Pull out the ashtray and remove the two trim screws that are exposed below the ashtray. Remove the trim around the gearshift by lifting gently from one of the corners.

Unsnap the center console trim by lifting from the bottom and pulling gently away from the dash. Some models have a comfort switch underneath the panel, press the button as you remove the console cover.

Locate and remove the four screws that hold the radio and air conditioning in place in the Maxima dash. Pull the radio pocket assembly out and disconnect the wires from the back of the stereo.

Connect the wiring harness adaptor and Nissan antenna adapter to the original plugs. Snap the wires into the back of the new head unit and turn the radio on.

Test to verify all of the speakers are working properly and the controls are available. Screw the stereo into the dash and replace all of the screws and trim.

Tips & Warnings

Don't attempt to replace a factory installed Bose sound system without the aid of a professional.
