How to Replace a Relay in a Nissan Pathfinder

Relays regulate the flow of current to and from high current devices such as the starter, fuel pump, horn or headlights within the electrical system of your 2008 Nissan Pathfinder. If a high current device doesn't work, you may have a broken or damaged relay. Whether you have the VQ40DE or VK56DE engine, Nissan has made finding, removing and replacing relays an easy task for DIY-ers.

Owner's manual
Replacement relay
Magnifying glass (optional)
Soldering tools (optional)
1

Disconnect the battery as an accidental electrical surge during repair could hurt you or cause costly damage to your vehicle.
2

Locate the fuse and relay box in the engine compartment of your 2008 Nissan Pathfinder. With either engine types, you can find the fuse and relay box directly below the fuse/fusible link box to the right of the windshield washer fluid reservoir.
3

Open the fuse and relay box by pushing in the tab and lifting the cover off. Locate the relay that's not working and pull it from the relay socket housing.
4

Check the box area for dirt, corrosion or damage. Clean, fix or repair any area as needed. In addition, check your relay's circuit board solder for microscopic cracks with a magnifying glass before replacing it with your new relay. Soldered joints can crack causing resistance in the relay and a voltage drop. Consider resoldering the joints to restore the non-working relay to working condition.
5

Place the relay back into its socket, if you decided to repair it with soldering. If you have a new relay for your Nissan Pathfinder, plug it in. Confirm that the relay fits securely within its socket as current running through a loose relay can cause the relay to overheat or the outer casing to melt.
6

Replace the box cover, reconnect your battery and verify that the new relay works by testing your high current device.

Tips & Warnings

Never use a higher capacity relay or wires as a temporary relay issue "fix" as electrical surges can damage wiring or potentially result in a fire.
